The cleaning method for placemats depends on the material; different materials require different cleaning methods.
Common placemat materials include PVC, leather, fabric, silicone, and soft glass. PVC placemats can be wiped directly with a damp cloth. Stubborn stains can be gently scrubbed with a neutral detergent and a soft brush. Remember to dry them thoroughly after washing to avoid water residue. Leather placemats require a special leather cleaner; apply a small amount and wipe gently. Afterward, use a leather conditioner to maintain shine and softness.
Most fabric placemats are washable. When machine washing, it's best to use a laundry bag and a gentle cycle. Avoid washing with other clothes to prevent color bleeding. Air dry naturally after washing; do not expose to direct sunlight. Silicone placemats are heat-resistant and flexible. They can be thoroughly cleaned with dish soap or even boiled for disinfection. Simply dry after washing. Soft glass placemats can be wiped with a damp cloth. Stubborn stains are effectively removed by gently wiping with toothpaste or alcohol. Be careful to avoid scratching with hard objects.
If there are oily pen marks on the placemat, you can apply alcohol or eucalyptus oil, let it sit for a while, and then wipe it off. Coffee or tea stains can be removed immediately by wiping with a damp cloth dipped in baking soda. Regardless of the material, the placemat should be completely dried after washing before use to avoid moisture causing mold or deformation.
